Foods You Should Never Feed to Birds

The food you give your birds directly affects overall health and wellness. There are many foods that are potentially toxic to our feathered friends. It’s important to understand which foods you should never feed to birds to keep your own birds safe and healthy.
The Evolution of Bird Food
People have been keeping birds as pets for thousands of years. While tropical species served as status symbols, birds like pigeons and canaries were also relied on to help people communicate. Feeding birds has also evolved from offering simple rice cakes to a variety of different seeds cultivated by bird experts and farmers.
Feeding animals brings joy to people, but there are definite limitations to the practice. Knowing exactly what they like is key, but equally important is recognizing what could harm them.
What Can Go Wrong
Buying bulk can save money, but bird seed can go rancid or develop mold. Be sure to keep your bird’s bird food in an airtight container and always use it by the expiration date.
Along similar lines, leftover fruits and veggies inside a bird’s cage several hours after meal time, it may be wise to remove them to reduce the chance of spoilage.
Food Toxic to Birds
Birds should never be offered the following foods that are toxic:
- Raw meat
- Bread
- Avocado
- Chocolate
- Onions or garlic
- Apple seeds
- Nuts or seeds sold for human consumption (due to high salt content)
- Suet, especially if made from bacon fat (suet is more suitable for outdoor or backyard birds)
- Honey
- Potato chips or anything deep fried
- Alcohol or caffeine
- Foods intended for other animals, such as dog or cat food
- Artificial dyes or flavors (especially the sugar alternative Xylitol)
It’s also worth mentioning that various houseplants can pose significant health risks to pet birds. Either keep these plants out of the house or in areas inaccessible by your pet bird:
- Lilies
- Dieffenbachia
- Elephant’s ear
- Mistletoe
- Philodendron
Promoting Bird Health
To limit the chances of digestive issues, heart problems, neurological conditions like seizures, or even sudden death, be sure to closely monitor your pet bird’s access to any of the above foods and plants. Items like vapes, cigarettes, and other tobacco devices should never be used near pet birds or left out for them to accidentally chew on or ingest.
